Life at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is meant to be a platform for acquiring knowledge, shaping character, and fostering integrity. However, in reality, some students have become involved in dangerous social misconduct, including promiscuous behavior, skipping classes, misuse of campus facilities, violation of safety regulations, and immoral conduct in secluded or restricted areas. Such behavior not only harms the individuals themselves but also threatens the harmony of the campus and the reputation of the university.
These social issues often stem from lack of self-control, careless attitudes towards rules, peer influence, and a negative environment. Students who neglect integrity are at high risk of facing serious disciplinary action, including suspension, barring from residence halls, exam suspension, and expulsion from the university. According to the Universiti Putra Malaysia University and University College Rules (Student Discipline) 2024, Rule 58(1), penalties may include warnings, community service of up to 24 hours, fines of up to RM500, campus bans, or a combination of punishments to ensure students understand the consequences of their actions.
Beyond individual consequences, social misconduct can create tension and disharmony within the campus community, lower the motivation of other students, and tarnish the university’s public image. Students involved risk not only losing academic opportunities but also facing social stigma that may adversely affect their future.
This phenomenon serves as a strong reminder that every student is responsible for their own behavior. Social misconduct does not merely harm the individual; it negatively impacts the broader community and the institution. Without awareness, the risk of severe disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion, is high, and a student’s reputation can be permanently damaged.
