WHAT IS A STUDENT DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE?

In universities, discipline plays a crucial role in ensuring a harmonious and disciplined learning environment. Students who violate regulations will face an investigation and hearing process conducted by an official committee appointed by the Board of Directors of Universiti Putra Malaysia, known as the Student Disciplinary Committee.

Generally, the Student Disciplinary Committee is a committee established to hear, evaluate, and decide on actions to be taken against any student accused of misconduct. This committee operates in accordance with the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU), as well as the regulations stipulated by the university. The fundamental principle in every proceeding is to ensure that justice is afforded to all parties involved.

The members of the Student Disciplinary Committee comprise several principal individuals representing various student-related divisions within the university. Firstly, a chairperson will preside over the proceedings. For academic misconduct, the Chairperson is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), while for non-academic misconduct, the Chairperson is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni). The Head of Administration Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs) and The Head of Administration Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) (for postgraduate students) and the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies (for undergraduate students) will also be members of the committee, providing perspectives based on their experience in academic affairs and student development. Concurrently appointed to the committee are the Chair of the Heads of Residential Colleges Council, the Chair of the Council of Deans, and the Head of the Counseling Division, who, by virtue of their roles, possess a more profound understanding of students' backgrounds and needs. Furthermore, an academic member with expertise in the field of law is also appointed to be accountable for advising the panel from a legal perspective. Subsequently, a representative from the Legal Advisor's Office was also invited to attend as an observer to ensure transparency, even though they were not involved in the decision-making process. Finally, a representative from the Student Affairs Division was also appointed, who was responsible for the documentation of the proceedings and the management of student disciplinary matters.

A thorough understanding of the structure of the Student Disciplinary Committee is essential for all students. Such knowledge not only empowers students to be fully aware of their rights and responsibilities but also prepares them to approach any proceedings with greater composure and confidence. Importantly, the role of the Student Disciplinary Committee extends beyond mere punishment; it is fundamentally committed to upholding justice and fostering the development of disciplined and responsible individuals, both during campus life and in their future careers.
